You’ve taught courses in your office. Now, you can’t. Before you turn on the camera read my four ‘must haves’.

Your training calendar looked phenomenal. Until now. Why? It was all ‘live’. Yes, ‘live’ training is best, but it’s impossible now. So, how are you going to pivot to effective online training?

Just Turn on the Camera–Not

We can get away with a lot when we are ‘live’. We can wander a bit from the outline the audience will forgive us.   After all, we have an audience with whom to interact. We take questions, we create debate, we tell those great war stories. 

Is Your Course Really a ‘Course’?

I’ve taught real estate professionals and affiliates how to train for over three decades. I’ve seen dozens of their ‘courses’. Unfortunately, most aren’t courses. They’re streams of information. They’re not well-organized. They don’t have the end in mind–objectives. They don’t have various delivery methods (teaching methods other than that old boring lecture). Even though those problems don’t show up so badly in the live classroom, they show up with a vengeance when going online.

You’ll Need These Four Strategies in your Online Course

How are you going to avoid droning on until you get to the end of that hour you’ve booked to train? Here are the four things you need in your online presentation or course:

  1. An blazingly good course organization, created from learning objectives (having the end in mind)*

     2.  An easy, engaging process to draw the attendee in and keep him/her interested (methods to avoid droning on forever in a lecture) (self-analysis, reflection, case studies to complete)

    3.  Interaction and idea exchange with others in the course (adults learn from others)           

     4. Action plans and reviews so you can see your attendees putting your concepts and skills to work 

Before You Choose that Seminar Guru’s ‘Training’ Course

You may decide to go outside your office to find online training. Does that course have those 4 attributes I listed above? Who is the course for? Does it have accountability? Does the course have a method for you to coach the agent to the course? What will the agent accomplish through taking the course?

small write outlineIn an earlier blog, I gave you some tips to controlling audiences. There’s no reason your class attendees should feel the class is out of control. After all, it’s up to us to keep that class interested, interesting, and moving. Here are more tips to do just that.

1.A�A�A�A�A� Limit the general discussion. Youa��re behind time (you did time your class and put your time frame on your outline, didna��t you?). You see 5 hands raised and you need to move on. Herea��s the phrase:

a�?We have time for 2 more questions.a�?

2.A�A�A�A�A� Stop the chatty Kathys. There are a few techniques you can use that work.

a.A�A�A�A�A� Walk away from the a�?Kathya�� so she cana��t catch your eye and/or wave her hand in your face.

b.A�A�A�A�A� Ask each person to a�?write it downa�� first. (stops the hand jerking into the air!)

c.A�A�A�A�A� Ask the person to tell another person, not the whole group.

d.A�A�A�A�A� Ask for feedback this way: a�?What did you hear {your work partner} say that you really liked?a�?

3.A�A�A�A�A� Quit teaching only from the front of the room. Be sure you can walk down the aisle, and, if you have a mike, it allows you to do so. Making eye contact and respecting the learners in all parts of the room is graceful and effective.A�

Handling Really Tough Situations

Sometimes, once in a great while, someone just has a meltdown. If that happens, take a short break. Take that person out of the class (never, ever address a concern in front of others, or try toA� rival stand-up comedian, the sarcastic but always funny Don Ricklesa��you arena��t and youa��ll lose). Use this dialogue:

a�?Ia��m feeling badly {be sure and use the word a�?feelinga��} about whata��s going on in there. What can I do to make this a good learning experience for you?a�? Or, a�?We need to move ahead and cana��t seem to do so. What can I do for you so we can move ahead together?a�?

When all else fails, personally and privately invite that person out of the class.

Whoa��s Important?

The learning of the majority of the class is whata��sA� important. Ita��s up to you as training/facilitator/presenter to gain and use the skills that assure a great course experience.
